Come suggerisce l’intestazione cui si intitola il Gruppo di ricerca, racconto e novella, benché spesso avvertiti come intercambiabili, sono istituti differenti. Lo mostra innanzi tutto il Decameron, nel quale è agevole distinguere le singole novelle dal racconto della crescita intellettuale e civile dei dieci giovani, che quelle novelle incornicia, e che conferisce al libro la sua specifica fisionomia: quella non di una raccolta di semplici novelle, ma di un libro di novelle che vengono via via raccontate e commentate. All’interno delle due categorie narrative individuate si giuoca di fatto gran parte della storia della narratio brevis in Italia. I confini cronologici indicati, peraltro da non intendersi in senso rigidamente esclusivo, vanno dalla data della presumibile composizione del Novellino al Cunto de li cunti di Basile.
